CONTEXT
Lifting, running, and dancing…alone
The current app idea is about users tracking their fitness goals and progress - but this has been done so many times before. The proposal suggests social features that allow inter-user communication like messaging, sharing, etc.
GOALS
Celebrating the gains - big and small!
The new features should focus on sustaining progress, keeping each other accountable, and maintaining positivity. This can look like:
Message each other about health and fitness goals/achievements
Create shared challenges and keep each other accountable
Alert group members as progress or goals are met
Motivate & encourage each other to stay consistent

RESEARCH
Research
Fitness and its connections to psychology and sociology are quite profound. The most essential takeaways from the secondary research process were:
The use of features that elicit relatedness, autonomy, and competence predicts exercise outcomes.
Sharing fitness data with social networks motivates users to continue self-tracking and enhances their existing social relationships.
Esteem support is directly associated with stronger intention for exercise and higher levels of self-tracked exercise.
A moderate amount of upward comparison enhances exercise intention.

PERSONA
Ever wanted an accountability buddy?
Many people have ambitious fitness goals, but the hardest part is typically getting started. Ever asked a friend to be your accountability buddy? You may be the target user of PulsePeak. We all crave a sense of community when tackling new challenges!

I want to lead a healthy life, but I also need a good amount of accountability from others to get there!
Frustrations
He’s not naturally inclined to go to the gym out of internal motivation, and finds it difficult to stay consistent.
Like many others, he feels defeated when he cannot reach a milestone as quickly as he'd like to - leading to burnout and inconsistency.
His job also often has long hours, so he feels too tired to go exercise afterwards.
Goals
Wants to be more consistent with exercising
Wants to foster sustainable fitness goals that align with his work life balance
Wants to be a part of a group that keeps each other accountable

Accountability
HOW MIGHT WE?
What does accountability ACTUALLY look like?
Allow people to seamlessly interact with and encourage each without interrupting their workout
Motivate people to stay active by using a communal tracking system that doesn’t lead to extreme upward comparison or burnout?
Motivate people furthermore with the usage of interpersonal communication methods?
USER FLOWS
Keeping each other in check efficiently
Based on the discovery synthesis, I designed two user flows for the new features that will be designed.

Creating and joining challenges will allow the users to share common goals to work towards while keeping each other accountable.
Engaging with others by messaging / reacting will promote intimacy within communities that encourage the users to motivate one another

Style Guide
I wanted the look of the product to feel simple but sophisticated. I decided to opt for a dark color theme with a consistent splash of gradients for the CTAs.

A small win:
100%
of the usability testing participants were able to get through all the red routes with ease. Most of the feedback were geared towards the UI, which was iterated to become clearer with the use of contrast.
Design Evolution & Testing
One aspect I tried to be mindful of at all times was that I was not tasked with reinventing a fitness app from scratch. Therefore, I focused on the features that will highlight communication features while. However, I still decided to redesign some existing screens for the purpose of consistency.

Sharing an Achievement
Share the achievement of completing your daily fitness goals or a longer challenge. You may do this retroactively or opt to skip the option altogether.
--- This allows the user to share & check progress without interrupting the flow of the actual workout. ---
Encouraging One Another
React and comment on each other’s milestones to keep the accountability going.
--- Esteem support is associated with stronger intention for exercise and higher levels of self-tracked exercise. ---
Message Privately
Message your friends and family about your current fitness struggles and wins. Tell them about why you think a certain Challenge might fit them.
--- Sharing fitness data with social networks motivates users to continue self-tracking while being in control of who they share this information with. ---

Takeaway
Aligning business goals with user goals was the most challenging aspect of the project, as the two are often not one in the same. But by implementing messaging and interaction features, we were able to promote user retention and engagement whilst also encouraging them to stay consistent with their fitness pursuits.
